With the words “natural” and “eco-friendly” being unregulated in the USA, it can be hard to know which mattress brands you can trust.
I contacted multiple companies who said their products were organic, to check:
They had organic certification by trusted third parties (like GOTS and GOLS which certify wool, cotton, and natural latex)
They were free from flame retardant chemicals, toxic polyurethane foam and VOCs (like formaldehyde glue)
As it can be tiring to do all this research, I wanted to share the best American brands that make eco-friendly, and organic products from natural materials.
My goal is to make sustainable, non-toxic living easier for you by doing all the research. Some blog posts contain affiliate links to eco-conscious products at no extra cost to you.
1. The problem with standard mattresses
Standard mattresses are made from synthetic materials, like polyurethane foam (memory foam).
Polyfoam is derived from crude oil, a fossil fuel that causes a whole bunch of environmental and human rights issues.
It is also extremely flammable so to meet fire safety regulations, it requires toxic flame retardant chemicals to meet fire safety regulations.
You will also find:
Polyester
Synthetic latex
PVC
Conventional cotton (grown with pesticides)
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) like formaldehyde
Toxic flame retardants
2. What to look for in a natural, non-toxic mattress
You may be wondering what a natural mattress is, and how you can tell.
The word “natural” is not regulated, so a brand that uses the word to describe its product might only be referring to one small part of it.
This makes it tricky to know if you’re being greenwashed.
When I use the word natural, I’m referring to materials found in nature.
A natural mattress brand may swap synthetic polyfoam for natural latex foam. Natural latex is derived from rubber trees and is more sustainable.
Another example is wool which is naturally fireproof and prevents the need for added flame-retardant chemicals.
Using multiple layers of these fabrics helps to make a naturally fire-resistant product.
what I look for in a non-toxic, Eco-Friendly mattress:
✅Natural materials - organic wool, organic cotton, natural latex, coconut coir
✅Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification to ensure cotton and wool is produced to the highest organic standards
✅Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) - this certifies that latex and latex foam is organic
✅Local manufacturing and material transparency
✅Fair wages and safe working conditions for employees and farmers
❌No foam - some brands advertise their products as “natural” and don’t say they are using foam and toxic flame retardant chemicals
❌Avoid any mattresses with a PVC/vinyl coating as this is toxic
3. What about certiPUR foam?
CertiPUR is an independent foam certification. It is controversial because it was created by polyurethane foam companies.
Suppose a mattress brand has described its product as natural or organic but has a certiPUR certification. In that case, it means it contains synthetic foam and fire retardants.
It can’t be made of polyfoam and also be a natural product.
If a foam mattress is the only type you can afford, it is better to get one certified by CertiPUR because it means it will have been tested for banned substances, such as flame retardants that have been phased out and phthalates.
The products in my list of best natural mattresses do not contain any synthetic foam, therefore, do not need CertiPUR certification.

Naturepedic mattresses are wonderful for partners who can’t agree on firmness because you can choose a firmness level for each side of the bed.
If you’re not happy with the firmness you chose, you have 100 days to change it (and it’s surprisingly easy to do!)
It’s also suitable for restless sleepers or partners who have significant differences in their weight because it has a separate fill. This means you can’t feel your partner rolling around in bed.

Organic latex mattress: this is a traditional mattress made from latex with a layer of wool. All materials are certified organic. It is available in “firm” or “extra firm.”
Organic latex Shikibuton: a 3-inch thick, lightweight mattress made from latex wrapped in wool and cotton twill.
Revitalisation programme
One thing I really appreciate about Soaring Heart is their ‘Revitalization’ program.
Recognizing that natural fibers can compress and lose some of their bounce over time, the company offers the option to refresh your mattress by adding new layers of cotton or wool instead of replacing the entire item.
They provide this service for just the cost of raw materials and labor, which typically amounts to about a fifth of the price of a brand-new sleep system.
